October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

The Do You Know Cancer team has been doing their research in recent weeks, hoping to find a great list of events and other ways to support breast cancer research during the month of October – known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We’ll be spotlighting nationwide events throughout the coming month as well, but here are some worth mentioning now:

Payless shoe stores will be offering the 2010 Breast Cancer Awareness Charm Bracelet, with all proceeds going to Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Called the Embrace the Cause bracelet, the accessory will be available for a purchase price of $2 at all stores and online starting October 1st. Since 2004, Payless has raised over $3 million dollars for breast cancer research. The bracelet features pink elastic bands adorned with “floating” silver-tone balls, all connected by the familiar pink ribbon we’ve come to associate with breast cancer awareness. Bracelets will be available while supplies last.

Yoplait USA is also continuing its Save Lids to Save Lives® program, which runs September through October each year. For each pink lid sent to the company by consumers, Yoplait donates ten cents to Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Yoplait guarantees a donation of at least $500,000. This program has raised over $25 million dollars so far, and all you need to do is buy your favorite yogurt with the unmistakable pink lid! Mail your lids by December 31, 2010 to Save Lids to Save Lives®, P.O. Box 420704, El Paso Texas, 88542-0704.

If you’re thinking of applying for a new credit card during October, consider the Bank of America Susan G. Komen for the Cure® card. For each account opened, Susan G. Komen will receive a minimum of three dollars, and 20% from each retail purchase made on the card [so roughly 20 cents for each $100 spent]. Each time a cardholder renews, Susan G. Komen receives $1. Cards have the Komen signature pink ribbon logo, as do paper checks associated with the account.

Just for the ladies, Wacoal® has partnered with Susan G. Komen for the Cure® to host Fi(gh)t for the Cure® events across the country. The goal? To “knockout breast cancer.” Women are invited to “step into the dressing room” at an event in their area and be fitted for a new bra by a Wacoal® bra specialist. The company will donate $2 to cancer research for each woman who participates – no purchase necessary. For every bra that’s sold, Wacoal® will donate another $2, and women who spend $80 or more will receive a free cosmetic bag! Visit the Fi(gh)t for the Cure® website to find an event in your area.

For those who want to kickstart their Christmas shopping, check out shopkomen.com. Their newest collection, Promise Me, is inspired by Susan G. Komen herself, and was developed by her sister, Nancy G. Brinker, Ambassador for Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and author of Promise Me: How a Sister’s Love Launched the Global Movement to End Breast Cancer. The collection debuts just in time for October, and features item ranging from a shawl with lace trim to cosmetic bags and tee shirts. The collection’s featured item is their Fashion Ribbon Tee, designed by Tory Burch.

And men – you can support breast cancer research too. Shopkomen.com offers plenty of “manly” options for men who want to shop for the cure, including golf polo shirts and New Balance® long-sleeve shirts.

Cosmetic haven ULTA is running its Windows of Love® campaign next month, too, with close to 400 of their store windows across the country covered in “love letters” written by women, many who know breast cancer. The letters offer words of encouragement and hope, and the campaign was started as a way to “create a visual testament to the power of women helping women” in the fight against breast cancer. ULTA is currently the largest beauty retail store in the U.S. You can visit their website for more information and to find out about the other ways you can contribute to cancer research just by shopping there in October!
